Blarney Castle is a medieval stronghold about 8 km northwest of Cork city, in County Cork, Ireland. The present tower keep (roughly 27 m / 90 ft) was built in 1446 by Cormac Láidir MacCarthy, Lord of Muskerry, on the site of earlier fortifications. It is world-famous for the Blarney Stone set high in the battlements: legend says that kissing it while leaning backwards over the parapet grants the 'gift of the gab' (eloquence). As of 2026 the castle is open year-round, with iron guard rails and staff to assist the kiss; although the keep is a partial ruin, its extensive gardens — the Poison Garden, the Rock Close and Blarney House — make it a rewarding half-day out.
Kissing the Blarney Stone: climb the narrow spiral stairs, lie back over the parapet gap and kiss the stone while a staff member holds you securely.
The tower keep: 15th-century rooms, murder-holes and machicolations, and rooftop battlements with views over Blarney village and the gardens.
