🇲🇵 Bird Island Marine Sanctuary

Bird Island · 사이판 북동부(마르피)

Location

Overview

Bird Island Marine Sanctuary is a small limestone islet off Saipan's northeastern Marpi coast, protected both as a seabird nesting sanctuary and as a fully no-take marine reserve covering the surrounding waters. A steep, rope-assisted trail drops down to a secluded cove where snorkelers find some of the healthiest coral reefs in the CNMI, along with a wide variety of reef fish, occasional barracuda, and sometimes sea turtles. Depths run a shallow 1-8 m with excellent 20-30 m visibility, but the tricky access and stronger current near the island itself make it better suited to snorkelers with some experience rather than absolute beginners. As of July 2026, landing on the island is still prohibited, and the outing centers on the overlook and the cove snorkel spot facing it.

Practical info

From Garapan, drive to the Marpi area, park at the overlook, then follow the dirt road and rope-assisted trail down to the cove; many visitors join a guided snorkel tour rather than going independently. Fees, trail conditions, and tour availability change, so confirm current details locally before you go.
