🇵🇹 Óbidos

Óbidos · 오비두스 (Óbidos)

Location

Overview

Óbidos is a hilltop town about an hour north of Lisbon, entirely enclosed by remarkably intact medieval walls. Whitewashed, flower-draped houses, cobbled lanes and a 13th-century castle give it a storybook feel, and since 2015 it has been a UNESCO City of Literature, dotted with bookshops tucked into former churches, cellars and even an old fire station. Compact enough to explore in a few hours, it is one of the country's most popular day trips from Lisbon.

Good to know

Practical info

From Lisbon, take the Rodotejo 'Rápida Verde' express bus from Campo Grande terminal — about 60 minutes and roughly €9.45 one way (verify latest), dropping you right by the main gate. Services thin out on weekends and holidays, so check the timetable. The town is tiny; 2–3 hours on foot is plenty, and comfortable shoes are essential on the cobblestones.
