Biarritz is often cited as the birthplace of European surfing, dating to 1957 when American screenwriter Peter Viertel brought a surfboard to the town. Côte des Basques, a point break within walking distance of downtown, is popular with longboarders and beginner-to-intermediate surfers. Strong Atlantic swells build the waves in autumn and winter, while summer conditions are gentler and more approachable for newcomers.
