Beqa Lagoon is a vast, sheltered barrier-reef lagoon wrapped around Beqa Island, just off Pacific Harbour on the south coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's main island. It's world-famous for shark diving, but for snorkelers the real draw is the calm, protected lagoon and its shallow reefs. Gardens of pink, purple and orange soft coral - Fiji is the "soft coral capital of the world" - spread across clear water (typically 15-30m visibility) at depths of just 1-8m, alongside tropical fish, giant clams and, with luck, sea turtles. SafetyInside the lagoon is usually calm, but currents pick up along reef edges and channels and can push you toward open water. Never snorkel alone - use a float or buoy and stay with a guide or buddy.
SafetyMany sites are reached by boat, so watch for boat and dive-vessel traffic. Wear bright, surface-visible gear and stay inside the marked snorkel area.
SafetyThese reefs hold stonefish, sea urchins, cone shells and fire coral, all capable of painful or dangerous stings. Keep hands and feet off the reef, wear a rash guard and reef shoes, and never touch marine life you can't identify.
