Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is a sea cave set into the golden cliffs of the Algarve (Lagoa), southern Portugal, world-famous for the round skylight in its ceiling that pours sunlight onto a small hidden beach inside. It cannot be reached on foot from land - access is only from the water by boat, kayak or SUP. Since August 2024, protected-area rules ban swimming into the cave and stepping onto the sand inside.
The iconic interior beach lit by a beam from the ceiling 'eye' (skylight) - one of the Algarve's signature sights
Boat and speedboat tours (from PortimΓ£o, Carvoeiro, Lagos, Armação de PΓͺra), usually 2-3 hours combined with other sea caves, cliffs and dolphin watching
Guide-led kayak and SUP tours - a closer, more active way to slip through the low arch into the cave
The clifftop Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (~5.7 km), a free hike that lets you peer down through the skylight from above
Golden sandstone cliffs, emerald water and the hidden coves of the Carvoeiro coastline

RulesSwimming into the cave and walking on the sand inside are prohibited (in force since 13 Aug 2024). Access is limited to licensed boat tours and guide-led kayak/SUP tours; entering the cave via a guideless rental is illegal. Confirm current rules before you go.
RulesTime and vessel limits apply: motorized boats may stay about 2 minutes, kayaks/SUPs about 8 minutes, with a cap on how many enter at once. No navigation between sunset and sunrise. Fines can be steep (reported from a few hundred to very high euro amounts), so use only authorized operators.
SafetyCliff (arribas) rockfall and collapse are a real hazard. Life jackets are required and helmets are increasingly mandatory in rockfall-risk zones. Don't linger against cliff edges and follow your guide's instructions.
SeasonPeak July-August is very crowded and hot. For a calmer visit go in May-June or September, and pick the earliest morning departure (around 7am). The famous light beam falls best roughly May-October, between about 10:00 and 13:00 when the sun is high.
SafetyWaves and shifting currents mean tours can be cancelled or altered in strong wind or swell. Check the operator's weather-cancellation and refund policy and whether departure is confirmed; if you're prone to seasickness, consider a larger boat over a small speedboat.
CautionBeware touts at the harbor or roadside offering unlicensed private rentals or promising you can 'land inside the cave' - that may be impossible or illegal under current rules. Book through a licensed, official operator.
