Overview
The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome's four papal basilicas and the largest church in the city dedicated to the Virgin Mary, founded from the early 5th century. Set on the Esquiline Hill, it is famed for its early Christian mosaics and Rome's tallest bell tower. Since Pope Francis was buried here in April 2025, pilgrim and visitor numbers have risen sharply.
The 5th-century mosaics on the triumphal arch and nave — considered the oldest surviving program of mosaic decoration in a Christian church.
The Marian icon 'Salus Populi Romani' (Protectress of the Roman People) in the Pauline Chapel, traditionally attributed to St. Luke.

RulesAs an active place of worship, the dress code is enforced. Both men and women must cover shoulders and knees; revealing clothing or garments with inappropriate images or messaging may be refused entry.
SafetyThe basilica sits near Termini station and the Esquilino district, where petty theft runs higher than in many central areas. Wear a cross-body bag in front and keep wallet and phone in front pockets. Avoid side streets near the station at night.
CautionNearby you may be handed a bracelet or trinket and then pressed for money, or find restaurants charging far more than photo menus suggest. Do not accept unsolicited items and check the bill before ordering.
MannersMass or prayer may be in progress, so keep quiet. At Pope Francis's tomb, subdued behavior and minimal photography are expected.
RulesThere is a security check, and visitors with large bags or luggage may be denied entry. Store your luggage beforehand.
SeasonQueues lengthen around Easter, 5 August (Miracle of the Snow), pilgrimage peaks, and periods of heavy visits to Pope Francis's tomb. Weekday mornings (roughly 8:00–9:30) are the calmest.
Practical info
Entry to the main basilica floor is free and needs no booking. Some areas — the Loggia, underground archaeological zone, museum and terraces — are ticketed and booking is advised. About a 10-minute walk from Termini (Metro Line A). Hours are generally 07:00–19:00 daily, but confirm current fees, times and rules on the official website before your visit.
