Bangaram Atoll is an uninhabited coral island in India's Lakshadweep archipelago, where an 8-by-4-kilometre reef rings a calm, glass-clear lagoon often called "India's Maldives." You can wade in straight off the resort beach with no certification and snorkel a shallow 1-6 m lagoon over coral gardens alive with parrotfish, pufferfish and other tropical species, with visibility reaching 20-30 m on a clear day. SafetyAt the outer reef edge, currents and tidal drop can strengthen and push you toward open water or onto sharp coral. Always snorkel with a buddy, carry a float or buoy, and stay inside the calm lagoon.
SafetyThe reef holds fire coral, sea urchins and sharp limestone that cause stings and cuts on contact. Wear a rash guard and booties, and never stand on or grab the coral.
