🇵🇭 Balicasag Island

Isla ng Balicasag, Bohol · 필리핀 보홀 팡라오

Location

Overview

Balicasag is a tiny, near-circular coral island (about 600 m across) off Panglao in Bohol, Philippines, and has been a protected marine sanctuary since 1985. Its unusual geography — a shallow coral shelf that drops almost immediately into a bottomless wall ringing the whole island — makes it one of the most reliable places in the Philippines to snorkel alongside green and hawksbill sea turtles right at the surface. The reef flat sits in just 1–6 m of warm 27–30°C water, teeming with tropical fish, with visibility often reaching 15–25 m on calm days. It is hugely popular, though, and as of 2026 busy mornings still see 10–15 bangkas and day-trip boats crowding the moorings, so an early start pays off.

Practical info

Balicasag is a 20–40 minute banca ride from Alona Beach on Panglao, usually included on an island-hopping tour that also visits Virgin Island. Leave around 7–8 a.m. to beat the crowds; sanctuary entry, environmental fees, boat hire, and gear rental are extra, and because fees and visitor limits change frequently, confirm the latest details with a local operator before you go.
