Paulista Avenue is São Paulo's signature 2.8 km boulevard, opened in 1891 and transformed from a street of mansions into the city's financial and cultural spine. It is anchored by MASP (São Paulo Museum of Art), Lina Bo Bardi's iconic glass-and-concrete box suspended on red pillars, alongside a dense run of museums, cultural centers and bookshops that earn it the nickname 'the heart of São Paulo.' As of 2025 MASP roughly doubled its space with the new Pietro Maria Bardi annex, and metro works along the Green Line are ongoing, so the avenue is in a period of change. Weekdays it teems with commuters, but every Sunday the road closes to cars and opens to walkers and cyclists, making it ideal for a relaxed stroll.

RulesMASP requires online booking in advance, including on its free day (Tuesday). Tickets are usually released a week ahead (around noon the previous Tuesday) on the official site and sell out fast, so book early. Confirm prices and hours before you go.
SeasonOn São Paulo's plateau temperatures swing sharply. Now (July) is dry winter with mild days but chilly mornings and evenings, so bring a layer; in summer (Dec–Mar) afternoon downpours are frequent, so pack an umbrella and water-resistant shoes.
MannersOn car-free Sundays the bike/scooter lane and the walking zone are separate. Don't stop or take photos in the cycle lane, and keep the flow moving for others.
Practical info
Green Line (Line 2) metro stations Brigadeiro, Trianon-MASP and Consolação run along the avenue, with Consolação interchanging to Line 4 (Yellow) Paulista station. The Sunday car-free program runs roughly 10:00–18:00 and the leisure cycle lane in the morning, but times can change, so check the latest. Parque Trianon is free; confirm museum prices, opening hours and free-entry days on the official sites before visiting.
