🇳🇴 Arctic Cathedral

Ishavskatedralen (Tromsdalen kirke) · 트롬쇠

Location

Overview

The Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen), officially Tromsdalen Church, is Tromsø's signature landmark, designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig and consecrated in 1965. Its eleven aluminium-clad concrete panels form a triangular white silhouette evoking icebergs and Arctic peaks, and its east wall holds a vast stained-glass mosaic, 'The Return of Christ'. Despite the 'cathedral' nickname it is in fact a working parish church that still holds services, and it doubles as a celebrated concert venue with midnight-sun concerts in summer and Northern Lights concerts in winter. In 2026 the Tromsø Bridge is closed for renovation, so check your access route before you go.

Practical info

From the centre, take bus 24 or 26 to the 'Tromsdalen kirke' stop; with the Tromsø Bridge closed until November 2026, use the tunnel, bus or a taxi (the walking route is affected). Typical hours are 09:00–18:00 in summer (1 Jun–15 Aug; Sun 13:00–18:00) and 10:00–17:00 otherwise (Wed closed 13:00–14:00; Sun 13:00–17:00), but events can change this; entry (adults about NOK 70) and concert tickets are separate, so verify current prices and times on the official website.
