The Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen), officially Tromsdalen Church, is Tromsø's signature landmark, designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig and consecrated in 1965. Its eleven aluminium-clad concrete panels form a triangular white silhouette evoking icebergs and Arctic peaks, and its east wall holds a vast stained-glass mosaic, 'The Return of Christ'. Despite the 'cathedral' nickname it is in fact a working parish church that still holds services, and it doubles as a celebrated concert venue with midnight-sun concerts in summer and Northern Lights concerts in winter. SeasonWhat you see depends on the season. In summer (1 Jun–15 Aug) midnight-sun concerts run nightly around 23:00, while winter brings Northern Lights and Nordic concerts. Midnight sun peaks late May–mid July; the polar-night and aurora season centres on November–January, so plan your dates around your goal.
SafetyThe Tromsø Bridge is closed for renovation until November 2026. Instead of walking from the city centre, take bus 24 or 26 (stop 'Tromsdalen kirke'), the Tromsøysund Tunnel, or a taxi, and confirm the latest access status before travelling.
RulesThis is an active church, so opening hours change or close at short notice for funerals, weddings and services. Check the official site for the day's opening before you go, and note that drones are prohibited (fines apply).
