Overview
Arborek Jetty sits in the Dampier Strait at the heart of Raja Ampat, the most biodiverse marine region on Earth, and is one of its most accessible snorkeling spots. The village jetty's pilings are blanketed in colorful soft corals, with dense clouds of glassfish (cardinalfish) sheltering beneath — snorkeling here feels like drifting through an aquarium. In just 1–5 m of water you can watch anthias and butterflyfish over the coral, spot giant clams (Tridacna gigas up to ~1.4 m) about 30 m west of the jetty, follow the staghorn-coral drop-off (~5 m) along the north shore, and encounter hawksbill turtles and reef-camouflaged wobbegong sharks. Visibility usually runs 15–30 m (over 30 m in Jan–Feb) with water at 28–30 °C. As of 2026 the whole area is a protected marine park with strictly enforced entry tags and rules, and Arborek is a busy, nationally recognized tourism village.

SafetyThe Dampier Strait has strong tidal currents, generally running east-to-west, so this is a drift-snorkeling site. Always check the tides; beginners should stay under the jetty where it is calmer and avoid being swept toward open water. Do not underestimate the current — use a float/buoy and never snorkel alone.
SafetyThe jetty is an active dock for homestay boats. Watch for boat and propeller traffic, look around before you surface, and come up close to the pilings rather than in the open channel.
SafetySea urchins, fire coral and stonefish can sting or cut — never grab or stand on coral or the bottom. Prolonged equatorial sun brings sunburn, dehydration and chill; beginners should enter in short sessions and be ready for mask fogging and panic.
RulesAs of 2026 two official fees are required to enter — the Marine Park entry tag (a one-year conservation fee) and a separate visitor entry ticket. Carry the waterproof tag, as it may be checked. Prices and issuing procedures change, so confirm the latest details with your operator or official channels before you go.
RulesJumping into the water from the jetty is prohibited — descend slowly. Touching or standing on coral and collecting marine life are forbidden, and reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged.
MannersKeep a respectful distance from turtles, mantas and other wildlife — do not touch or feed them. Control your buoyancy so you never stand on coral or kick it with your fins.
SeasonThe best window is the dry season, October–April, with the calmest seas and clearest water (over 30 m in Jan–Feb). Mantas are most likely in the Dampier Strait from December to April, and water stays around 28–30 °C year-round.
Practical info
Fly to Sorong (SOQ), take the ferry to Waisai, then a village boat out to Arborek Island. The island has homestays, gear rental and village tours, and most snorkeling is beach- or jetty-entry.
