At 3,724m, New Zealand's highest mountain, in a national park at the heart of the South Island's Southern Alps. It is famous for its snowcapped peaks, glacial lakes and pristine night sky (a Dark Sky Reserve).

SafetyAlpine weather changes fast — waterproof warm layers, plenty of water and checking the forecast are essential.
SeasonIn winter (Jun–Aug) snow and ice restrict trails; stargaze on clear nights.
