Hahoe is a well-preserved Joseon-era village set on a bend where the Nakdong River loops around it in an S-shape, giving the village its name ("river returning"). It is a living clan village of the Pungsan Ryu family whose descendants still reside here, including the head house of the famous statesman Ryu Seong-ryong. In 2010 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Yangdong as the "Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong."

MannersReal families live here, so do not enter private houses, courtyards, or peer/photograph over walls and through windows without permission.
RulesCars cannot enter the village core; park at the lot and use the free shuttle or walk. Smoking, cooking, and pets may be restricted to protect the heritage site.
SafetyThe Buryongdae viewpoint requires crossing the river (ferry or bridge) and climbing a cliff path; sections lack railings and are slippery after rain, so take care.
SeasonIn summer the riverside offers little shade and has mosquitoes; in winter closing time is earlier and the river wind is bitterly cold.
MannersThe head houses are wooden cultural properties—do not step on or lean against floors and pillars, and follow the marked route and no-entry signs.
Practical info
Hours are roughly 09:00-19:00 in summer and 09:00-18:00 in winter (shorter on some holidays/seasons—confirm the latest). Admission is around 5,000 won adults / 2,500 won teens / 1,500 won children, free for under-6, seniors 65+, people with disabilities, and national-merit holders (fees may change; verify before visiting). Your ticket includes the free shuttle bus between the parking lot and village entrance. From Seoul, take a KTX train or express bus to Andong, then a local bus or taxi. The mask-dance performance is free, usually at 2 p.m. (Tue-Sun Mar-Dec; weekends only Jan-Feb).
