Aït Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) of packed-clay (pisé) and mud-brick houses rising on a hillside above the Ounila River, northwest of Ouarzazate. Once a key stop on the caravan route linking sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech, it is one of the most complete examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It is world-famous as a film location for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones (as Yunkai), among many others. As of 2026 the site is fully open to visitors, with consolidation and restoration work visible in parts of the upper ksar; note that a handful of families still live within the walls, so treat it as a living heritage site.

Good to know
SeasonMidsummer (June-August) midday can exceed 30-40°C and there is almost no shade on the climb. Spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) are ideal; even in summer, visit in early morning or late afternoon.
SafetyThe path to the top is uneven earth and stone and can be slippery. Wear flat, sturdy shoes, bring a hat and at least 1L of water. After rain the Ounila River can rise, so you may need the footbridge and crossing can be difficult.
CautionPeople posing as 'official guides' may steer you the wrong way toward commission shops or demand a bogus 'entrance fee'. You can wander freely after crossing the river and following the main path; decline politely if you don't want a guide.
CautionSomeone may start applying henna to your hand before you agree and then demand an inflated price, and donkey or bridge river-crossings can be overpriced. Always confirm the price of henna, crossings and taxis explicitly before anything begins.
RulesWandering the ksar itself is free, but entering some private kasbah houses inside or using the western bridge may carry a small fee. Fees and opening times change often, so check the latest information just before you go.
MannersThis is an inhabited village and a conservative area with a shrine, mosque and cemeteries. Modest clothing is recommended, and ask permission before photographing residents, who may expect a small tip for photos.
Practical info
From Marrakech, take a CTM or Supratours bus to Ouarzazate (about 4 hours), then a grand taxi for the roughly 30 km (35-40 min); many visit on a day trip or overnight tour from Marrakech. You can walk the ksar freely, though visiting private kasbah houses or using the bridge may involve a small fee, and because prices and hours vary locally, check the latest information before your visit.
