Location

Overview

The Aiguille du Midi is a sharp 3,842 m rock spire in the Mont Blanc massif above Chamonix, France, reached by cable car that delivers you to one of the great viewpoints of the European Alps. When it opened in 1955 it was the highest cable car in the world, and it still holds the record for the greatest vertical rise, lifting you more than 2,800 m from Chamonix (about 1,035 m) to the summit in roughly 20 minutes. From the top terraces you get a 360° panorama of snow-capped Mont Blanc (4,808 m) and the French, Italian and Swiss Alps, with the glass-box 'Step into the Void' (Pas dans le Vide) adding a jolt of vertigo. It operates normally in summer 2026, but service depends entirely on weather, so the smart plan is to go up early on a clear morning.

Practical info

From the base station in Chamonix the ride goes up in two sections via Plan de l'Aiguille (about 2,317 m) to the summit, taking roughly 20 minutes each way, with a typical round-trip visit of 2–3 hours. It runs from early morning in the summer of 2026, but fares, operating hours and the reservation system change with the season and weather, so confirm the latest details on the official site before you go.
